'Minecraft' Tops 100 million Sales

The Minecraft giant shows no signs of slowing down. Developer Mojang today announced that Minecraft has sold 100 million copies across all platforms including Macs, PCs, consoles, and mobile. Since the beginning of the year, around 53,000 copies have been sold every day all over the world. The game is addictive. More than 40 million people open Minecraft every month to play with the axe, shovel and sword. A few games have even been close to hitting the 100 million mark, except Tetris.

Much of that success is due to the game's flexibility and endless potential. Players can construct whatever they want as long as the outward-facing geometry is comprised of colorful, simple blocks. Many players have continued to play the game for decades even though they're old. Mojang has provided constant updates to the game, including new mechanics, creatures, and materials. Its flexibility has made it a favorite in the classroom where it is used to teach science, art, and coding.

When Microsoft acquired Mojang around two years ago, people were wondering what it had planned for the game. Are there plans for a sequel? Some kind of exclusivity to Xbox, PC and Windows Phone?  Letrastraducidas Nothing has been realized. Minecraft is accessible on more platforms than ever before, and there's no word of a 'Minecraft 2.' Instead we've got an HoloLens Minecraft version, a spin-off adventure series from Telltale Games, and an acquisition by MinecraftEdu. This will soon result in a new version that is focused on education Minecraft. Soon there will be a Minecraft version specifically for China too.

Minecraft's popularity isn't waning. Its appeal isn't an unending story or stunning graphics -- because of this it has a timeless appeal that attracts youngsters as they become old enough to play it. As long as that continues, Minecraft will continue to sell in extraordinary numbers.
